Dream to Be A Freelancer?

Sometimes people think being a freelancer is really fun as we get to decide our own working hours, we get to work from home, we get more freedom than most office workers do.

Yes it’s good in those sense. But sometimes, like now, when we are working for long hours, it makes us wonder had our lives could be better if we just took up office jobs and don’t have to be under stress 24 hours a day.

Well, for me, I hate the routine of office workers’ lives, that’s why I am taking this route.

But I still hope that someday I can rely on other business to earn a living and thus reducing the reliance of working as a freelance web developer.

Don’t get me wrong, I love programming. I grew up programming. I love the challenges. I love technology. It’s just that sometimes I wish I only have to think about them from 9-5, and not for 24 hours a day.

  1. Hi Uzyn,

I have 2 things to say to you.

    1) If you love it, then do it for 24 hours. Not just from 9 - 5.
    2) You don’t have to think about it all the time really. Just manage your time right and you’ll have time for other stuff.

For me, I don’t bother. I just make sure I don’t take too many jobs and I only work on them as and when i feel like it. I don’t promise very fast delivery but I promise good quality. Chinese saying, Man Gong Chu Xi Huo. Takes a lot of discipline and passion, well, if you lack them, you should consider 9 - 5 then…

Looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday!

  2. Hey Aen! Thanks for the reminder for our meeting. I almost forgot though I already have it entered in my calendar.

Well, I love programming and creating things. I love it when I am programming to realize my own ideas, but it is kind of stressful when I am doing it as a job. I’m sure you, as a freelancer as well, fully comprehend what I’m saying. :)

  3. I think you’re referring to having the freedom where you can choose to accept jobs that you love working on and at the same time you’ve already reached the stage where financially you’re kind of stable?

That will be a good goal to work towards with isn’t it?

At the same time, I agree with Aen! When you love what you are doing so much (like me) then you wouldn’t mind thinking about it not just from 9-5. Because that’s your passion. You eat, live and breathe in it! haha :D

  4. Hey U-Zyn,

Aren’t you still in your last semester? Maybe that’s why you find yourself working really long hours since you have to juggle both work and studies.

Aen: “I don’t promise very fast delivery but I promise good quality.” I love that! Has this been trademarked? I wanna use this line on my clients in future!

Just to be kpo, are you two meeting up to discuss design?

  6. Looks like there are a lot of freelancers among the ping.sg community! Nice to have you all comment here. Thanks so much.

Veron, Aen and I are meeting a mutual client of ours. He’s handling the art design while I’m doing the system design.

And yeah, I’m still in my last semester. Just hoping to graduate soon so I can fully concentrate on my work. I think you juggling between your day job and your freelance design work is tougher than myself juggling between studies and my work.

Thanks Harro! By the way, did you program Harro! on your own as well? Looks interesting.

  8. I’d prefer to do all the geeky stuff as a hobby. My organization and planning skills isn’t there yet…

  10. Yeah it’s really tiring working in this line, sometimes feel like just wanna quit this job and flip burgers. :D

Just pamper yourself once in a while, miss dateline once in a while, earn less once in a while.

  11. working in office can be very stressed too.

I work in the office and i am stressed 24/7. I worried my customers’ investments are not making money. i dreamt of them complaining about me. i have to keep apologizing when customers do not get NICE account no. like 8888 or 3333. i woke up by my division head’s smses as early as 6.30am saying how much investments to close before a particular date…. and the list goes on.

I wish to be a freelancer if I have the skills like you!

  12. Baby, I know you’re in a great deal of stress too lately. I think you’re in a worse position than I am for the constant amount of pressure you’re getting from your bosses.

You have skills and I think you should be doing something else. Talking to you on MSN anyway. :)
