I Hate University Life

I’m getting quite pissed these days, with the stress level building up due to the approaching project deadlines.

I do not understand how these people are doing Engineering in university, but can’t do a bit of thinking and give up easily when it comes to project work. Some Computer Engineering students can’t even understand a properly commented C code or the process of compilation or the difference between source code, binaries and data files or the basic of networking.

As a result, there are some who are putting in a lot of effort but lack of proper thinking skills, thus giving them a false sense that they’ve accomplished something. And then there are some who would just give up. I would normally end up having to do or redo their work, except with the former, I had to tell them that they have done a good job in order not to hurt them.

I don’t know why these people are in Engineering. Engineers are supposed to be making things, building and creating things. Logic and thinking skills are the most important and basic skills in engineering.

And most often than not, these are also the people that are scoring higher marks than I do in written theoretical exams.

How can I not hate university life.

  1. Interesting isn’t it how the people with the passion focuses on the things that matter(the processes and such) while the lost sheep look at the end product(exams)

…so perhaps the system is really looking at the wrong components of education huh?

  2. My philosophy on how not to be disappointed by your marks. Put in the minimal effort possible when you think something is not of interest to you.

  3. Consider it good training, the Real World is no different!

There’s PhD-holders out here, with 10+ years lab experience, who have yet to figure out basic equipment troubleshooting (eg bad cables, weak solder joints, etc). :)

Don’t be afraid to give (constructive) criticism just because you think it’ll hurt their feelings - praising them and/or redoing their work is really not the best thing you can do for them; it’s not fair to you, and it’s also partly your responsibility as a fellow student/project member to help them learn.

Being able to give constructive criticism diplomatically is quite an important skill as well! :)

  4. in reality, those who can score are those who can’t work. (that’s in working world too)

I’m one of those from Engineering who can’t score. =P

  5. Ha, me too!

No scholarship…no 4.x GPA…no favours from any Chairman…and still got hired by an RI near you!

(or maybe they’re really just scraping the bottom of the barrel…)
