The Dreaming Entrepreneurs

As a result of the effort by the government and universities in encouraging youths to be entrepreneurial, a lot of the younger generations are starting to have dreams and ideas that they believe they can pursue as their future career.

While that may be a good thing on its own, the sad thing is that a lot of these people are thinking that a great idea/dream alone is sufficient to get them where they want to be. They believe that by offering stakes/partnerships to people, people would be impressed with their ideas and would be willing to work for them, for free, except for the stakes. Yes, bootstrapping is part of entrepreneurship, but this is clearly a misinterpretation on the idea of bootstrapping.

Along the route of my work as a freelance web developer, I have received several such partnership requests, offering imaginary stakes in their imaginary future companies in exchange for my service in web development. So far I haven’t accepted any.

While dreaming and being creative and innovative is good, what these people really need to learn is to have a more down-to-earth plan towards achieving their dreams. If the whole entrepreneurship is just about having a good idea and getting people to work on it for free, why is there a need for all the entrepreneurial education that the tertiary institutes in this country are giving?

Or is it due to these education that more and more of the younger generations are starting to have these dreams?

  1. couldn’t agree with u more!! while it can definitely bring benefits to the society overall, this whole entrepreneurship thing is somehow being hyped up..

i have numerous friends who would come up to me and share their “fantastic” ideas without any solid contemplation.. i could only listen to them with my mouth wide open.. and it is the same people who would talk abt starting one particular biz today and totally forget abt it tomorrow.. they would jump from one idea to another every other 5 min or so..

what is really lacking in local scene is the “passion and drive” to succeed.. which cannot simply be propagated by seminars, workshops and networking sessions..

  2. I’m with you there too uzyn. Not only students have this attitude. Singapore angels (with small ‘a’) have the same.

They have dreams of a YouTube or something, but they don’t understand how much time, effort, and financial dedication it would take to make that investment grow.

However, investing in these little startups is still very important because these will the be shakers of the future.

  3. hmmm… I dont agree with you completely, uzyn.
It’s true that there are lots of people who are ‘turned on’ by this whole entrepreneurship ‘fad’, but who really don’t understand what they are getting into.
However, just because someone approaches you and asks you to join their team and work for free (or almost free), it may not NECESSARILY mean that they don’t know what they’re upto.
An idea of course isn’t everything. But smart execution also involves getting in smart people who believe in the idea. If I, for eg., am not ready to take the risk to work for a startup solely for equity and a meager pay, it might possibly mean that I don’t really believe in that startup.
    What do you think?
