uzyn.com Relaunched: Goodbye Wordpress, Hello Chyrp

uzyn.com is back. After quite a long hiatus.

I’ve been wanting to ditch Wordpress for quite awhile, for its bloat and its complicatedness but haven’t been able to find something simple but does not lack in essential blogging requirements/features. At a point in time, I even wanted to write my own blog engine, a simple one, but considering my current workload, that is definitely out of the question.

Until a few days ago, I discovered Chyrp. Chyrp is lightweight, yet very extensible and complete. The bare installation does not even have a commenting system, which makes a lot of sense because some blogs do not require commenting system at all. The goodness of Chyrp comes mainly in this extension - Tumblr Pack - with the installation of the feather, now you get to post not just usual blog but other types of content similar to a Tumblelog. There are more extensions available and I have yet to explore them all.

I will also be playing around with Chyrp over the next couple of days and further customize this blog. But so far, I would say Chyrp is the right blogging platform for me for now simply because of its lightweight.

Simple is right.

  1. I love the name “Chryp” and I love how they call extensions “Feather”.

Makes it feel really lightweight. Fabulous copywriting!

  5. I heard of Chyrp quite sometime back at time it was still in beta, but I guess it is more matured now.

WP is getting more and more features (bloated) as version increases. WP 2.5 also featured a built-in gallery which I don’t even use.

  7. Chyrp have a MVC framework and that should allow easy modification to the engine pretty easy. Will like to know the spam prevention that it has. Care to share the experience?

And, I cannot resist this, Chyrp: can I buy a vowel?

  9. Hmmm … been using Wordpress and loving it so far. Perhaps because I was used to have that Joomla and gosh, that was “heavy”. I had it till it was hacked by hackers beyond all recognition and I threw in my towel.

Writing your own engine?! Sounds like a lot of work! All the security measures and so on.

Anyway, have fun with your little discovery :)

  10. Chyrp is like WordPress v1. WP was very light when it first came out with nothing much to offer in terms of extensibility.

Had a look. Nothing much in the documentation. Probably will wait for it to become even more mature to start experimenting with it.

Chyrp is to Wordpress as MacBook Air is to MacBook Pro?

  11. Even though WordPress 2.5 is packed with more feature, it somehow has a slight speed increase too. Maybe it’s just me. But Chyrp’s looking very nice. :)
